I used to believe that writing was just sitting down, and typing. Just that simple. Turns out that I was COMPLETELY off the mark.
For example, my story about Elodie Hunter. It isn't just writing about Elodie, no, nothing can ever be that simple. I have had to construct a WORLD for Elodie to exist in. Worlds with its own rules and etiquette, its own government, the PROBLEMS politically and financially, whether or not it will CONCERN Elodie, Elodie's parents, (because I assume everyone HAS them, even if Elodie's are dead). Not to mention the magical aspect of it, which is a HUGE part of it, I can assure you.
How magic works, for example, and why some people are capable of doing magic, why some are not, why some people are more powerful than others? There are also the magical GADGETS that I need to invent. I've come up with some stuff, some fun and quirky stuff that would add to the world, but not necessarily contribute anything important.
How would Elodie get to school? How would ANYONE get to the magic school? What would the school BE like? The subjects? The teachers? How many students will there be? How will students be sorted into their dorms? Because you can't have mass travelling every morning, that's just insane. And you can't have kids with opposite personalities sleeping in the same room, fights will be happening every day! Considering that the school is for children from the age of 10 to 18.
And how to keep people from thinking: "This is a Harry Potter rip off, because it has magic and wands and a wizarding school." All true, of course, except for the rip off part. I guarantee you Elodie came to me first, then she gradually explained her family background to me, and what she'll be going through.
This is the FIRST time I realise that authors are extremely gifted. And I may not be cut out for it. Hopefully I am, though. I would LOVE for everyone to get to know Elodie, prissy princess as she is. And Elodie is, as seen by outsiders, the PERFECT 10 year old girl. She never misbehaves, listens aptly in class, scores all A's and occasional B's, just to show people that "I am normal, really".
She always looks flawless, first thing in the morning, after a rough afternoon of sports, even while in battle. She gets dirty, sure, and her hair gets all messy and frizzy, and out of place, but she still looks beautiful. That's what makes her tons of enemies. All the girls will be jealous, all the guys will think she's completely out of reach and unreal, and Elodie will feel like nobody understands her.
Other pretty girls will want to befriend her, seeking her help to dominate the school, while not so pretty girls will be so jealous of her they don't really want to be her friends, they just want some of that attention from other people. So that's Elodie pretty much sorted, as she always was. Now I just have to construct the world around her.
As easy as it sounds, I think it'll take a while. So until next time, I'll be writing.
